He&#8217;s asthmatic, kind of dorky and prone to giving cheesy inspirational speeches (\u201cBecause it&#8217;s their time. Their time! Up there! Down here, it&#8217;s our time. It&#8217;s our time down here!\u201d). But in the world of <i>The Goonies<\/i>, where kids armed with only a sense of childlike innocence can defeat armed robbers <i>and<\/i> real estate tycoons, Mikey is undeniably the star. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the help of his friends, he ties Brand to a chair with his own exercise equipment, lets the air out of his bike (forcing him to ride a pink girl\u2019s bike, leading to his humiliation in front of the girl he likes), leads him by the nose through a dangerous underground cavern and almost gets him killed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, to pour salt on the wound, Mikey ends up kissing Brand\u2019s girlfriend before Brand does. It\u2019s a good thing for Mikey that his older sibling is so well-adjusted, otherwise he\u2019d have been locked in his room and noogie\u2019d half to death long before meeting the Fratellis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) from <i>Ferris Bueller\u2019s Day Off<\/i> (1986)<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"517\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moviemaker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Ferris-Bueller.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1165298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.moviemaker.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/width=800,height=517,fit=crop,quality=80,format=auto,onerror=redirect,metadata=none\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Ferris-Bueller.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.moviemaker.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/width=428,height=277,fit=crop,quality=80,format=auto,onerror=redirect,metadata=none\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Ferris-Bueller.jpg 428w, https:\/\/www.moviemaker.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/width=788,height=509,fit=crop,quality=80,format=auto,onerror=redirect,metadata=none\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Ferris-Bueller.jpg 788w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As with <i>The Goonies<\/i>, the fact that sister Jeannie (Jennifer Grey) has a few years on Ferris doesn&#8217;t mean the younger sibling doesn&#8217;t get the run of the Bueller household, as you can <a href=\"https:\/\/exprealty.com\/us\/mn\/new-ulm\/houses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">see for yourself<\/a> here. Ferris uses his wit, audacity and disregard for rules to run rings around everyone, from his parents to the school principal to his best friend Cameron (Alan Ruck from <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviemaker.com\/succession-leads-27-emmy-nominations\/\">Succession<\/a><\/em>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Ferris wants to ditch school, steal someone else&#8217;s reservation at a fancy restaurant or indulge in a little impromptu singing on a parade float, well, he just does it. What&#8217;s worse, he seems to suffer no negative consequences for anything he does\u2014even though wrecking your best friend&#8217;s father&#8217;s Ferrari is probably a pretty good reason to be grounded for at least a few weeks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With his devil-may-care attitude and his longstanding rivalry with the dim-witted Principal Rooney (Jeffrey Jones), Ferris is the epitome of teenage cool\u2014but honestly, if you had a him as a little sibling, wouldn&#8217;t you hate him just as much as Jeannie does?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Sara (Maia Brewton) from <i>Adventures in Babysitting<\/i> (1987)<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moviemaker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Adventures-in-Babysitting.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1165301\" width=\"788\" height=\"513\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.moviemaker.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/width=700,height=456,fit=crop,quality=80,format=auto,onerror=redirect,metadata=none\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Adventures-in-Babysitting.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/www.moviemaker.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/width=428,height=279,fit=crop,quality=80,format=auto,onerror=redirect,metadata=none\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Adventures-in-Babysitting.jpeg 428w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 788px) 100vw, 788px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Maia Brewton (bottom) as little sibling Sara in <em>Adventures in Babysitting<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While other children her age are obsessed with Barbie dolls and playing dress-up, pre-teen hellion Sara Anderson has a different idol: Thor. While she still plays dress-up, instead of donning high heels and Mom\u2019s makeup, her outfit of choice is a plastic winged helmet and a superhero cape. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sara\u2019s adventurous spirit serves her well as she\u2019s led around the seedy Chicago underworld by her babysitter (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviemaker.com\/ralph-macchio-shares-regrets-about-elisabeth-shue-leaving-the-karate-kid-franchise\/\">Elisabeth Shue from <em>The Karate Kid<\/em><\/a>), whose impromptu trip to rescue her friend from a bus station leaves her\u2014and the three siblings she watching\u2014tangling with car thieves, mob bosses and gangs. While Sara\u2019s childlike innocence is cute when it makes her believe a surly mechanic (Vincent D\u2019Onofrio) is Thor in disguise (long, blonde locks and carries a hammer = God of Thunder), maybe her older sibling Brad (Keith Coogan) should\u2019ve pulled her aside at some point and told her that it\u2019s not <i>actually<\/i> possible to fly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, when Sara found herself chased around an office building by the leader of a ring of car thieves, she might have done the <i>smart<\/i> thing and yelled blue murder for an adult, instead of attempting to scale down the side of a skyscraper. Had it not been for her last-minute rescue, it\u2019s a pretty sure thing that those plastic wings on her helmet wouldn&#8217;t have stopped her plummeting 44 floors to her death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Sam (Corey Haim) from <i>The Lost Boys<\/i> (1987)<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imagesvc.meredithcorp.io\/v3\/mm\/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fstatic.onecms.io%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2Fsites%2F6%2F2022%2F11%2F01%2FThe-Lost-Boys-110122-02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"787\" height=\"524\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Cory Haim (left) as younger sibling Sam<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the younger brother of Michael (Jason Patric), a teenager who gets turned into a vampire (well, a half-vampire) after he falls in with a crowd of be-mulleted bikers, Sam handles his introduction to the world of the supernatural as any true younger brother would: obnoxiously. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From his initial reaction to discovering Michael\u2019s undead state (\u201cYou wait &#8217;til mom finds out, buddy!\u201d) to his ill-timed interjections during an emotional conversation between Michael and fellow half-vamp Star (\u201cYou drank someone\u2019s blood? Are you crazy?!\u201d), one thing that Sam can never be accused of is having dignity under pressure. (Though his&#8230; er&#8230; <i>unique<\/i> &#8217;80s wardrobe doesn&#8217;t help with the whole &#8220;dignity&#8221; thing, either.) But maybe it\u2019s not Sam&#8217;s fault\u2014being around all those mullets could melt anyone&#8217;s brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Phoebe (Ashley Bank) from <i>The Monster Squad<\/i> (1987)<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cinephilesandra.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/10\/monster-squad43.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"788\" height=\"436\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ashley Bank as Phoebe, the younger sibling of Monster Squad leader Sean<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>She might not have reached double digits yet, but when it comes to dealing with monsters, Phoebe knows her stuff. The younger sister of Monster Squad leader Sean (Andre Gower), not only does she befriend Frankenstein, who later becomes a powerful ally, she then gets Sean and his friends\u2014whose reaction to seeing the monster was to shriek and run away\u2014to accept him as a Monster Squad member with a memorable admonition: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s OK you guys, he&#8217;s friends with us! C&#8217;mon, don&#8217;t be chickens&#8212;\u201d When a five year old tells you to man up, you&#8217;d better do it. As if the pigtailed, dress-wearing Phoebe weren&#8217;t bad enough, it&#8217;s she who throws Dracula and the other monsters back into Limbo by reciting a German incantation that will only work if it&#8217;s read by a virgin.
